17 March 2021

Senator Ilyas Umakhanov, who until now had been the vice-speaker of the Federation Council, was appointed by a resolution of the Federation Council as its Special Envoy for cooperation with international organizations in preparing and holding the World Conference on Inter-religious and Inter-ethnic Dialogue in 2022.

The Speaker of the Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko, made a speech on this issue. The senators unanimously supported the proposal.

Earlier, a TASS source in the upper chamber said that the new position was needed "given the huge scale of the event and the special role of the Federation Council in its preparation as the initiator."

A world conference on inter-religious and inter-ethnic dialogue with the participation of state leaders, parliamentarians and representatives of the world's leading religions will be held in Russia on May 21, 2022. Matvienko's initiative to hold it was formulated at the 137th IPU Assembly in St. Petersburg in 2017 and was supported by the organization. In May 2018, its holding was supported by the United Nations in its resolution.
