Putin agreed to postpone the March of the "Immortal regiment" to 2021

20 July 2020

Russian President Vladimir Putin believes the decision of the organizers of the "Immortal regiment" to postpone the action to next year is correct.

"As much as we would not like [to hold the action this year], we will have to postpone the event to next year," the head of state said during a conversation with workers of the Zaliv shipbuilding plant in Kerch.

Putin promised that the "Immortal regiment" would be held "widely, powerfully, with dignity, and beautifully".

The President recalled that he had previously proposed to postpone the action, which is traditionally held on May 9, to July 26, when the Navy Day is celebrated and the parade takes place. "I consulted with experts and scientists until the last moment, and even set my schedule to attend the parade in St. Petersburg and fly to Red square in time," the head of state admitted. However, according to him, experts do not advise holding such a mass action in July.

Putin drew attention to the fact that the "Immortal regiment" cannot be held at a social distance. "The whole point of this kind of event is for the Russian people to demonstrate unity in the face of the memory of our fathers and grandfathers," the President is sure. Last week, the organizers of the "Immortal regiment" campaign decided to postpone the March to 2021 due to the sanitary and epidemiological situation associated with the coronavirus.
