Russia tests first Tsirkon missile from a nuclear-powered submarine

The atomic submarine Severodvinsk has successfully performed the first test launch of the hypersonic Tsirkon missile in the Barents Sea, the Russian defense ministry told reporters.


"The Russian Navy tested the hypersonic Tsirkon missile for the first time from the nuclear submarine Severodvinsk," the ministry said. According to its information, the shooting was carried out at a conditional sea target in the waters of the Barents Sea. According to objective control, the missile hit the target and its flight followed the set parameters.


The defense ministry said that the test firing of the Tsirkon missile from the nuclear-powered submarine was considered successful.


The missile was launched from a surface position.


A source in the defense industrial complex told TASS on September 30 that the first test launch of the submarine version of the hypersonic Tsirkon missile will be carried out from the nuclear submarine Severodvinsk in October. The second launch, depending on the results, is planned for November from underwater at a sea target.


On July 19, it was reported that the lead frigate of Project 22350, Admiral Gorshkov, successfully launched the Tsirkon hypersonic missile at a ground target with a flight speed of 7 Mach and a range of over 350 km. According to the military department, the lead frigate of project 22350 launched the missile from the White Sea. The ground target was located on the coast of the Barents Sea.
