State Duma introduced a new day of military glory in honor of the defeat of the Nazis in the battle for the Caucasus

The State Duma plenary meeting on Wednesday has adopted a law on a new day of military glory on October 9  - Day of defeat of Soviet troops fascist German troops in the battle for the Caucasus in 1943. The draft law was submitted to the lower house of Parliament by the Duma of the Stavropol territory.


"The battle for the Caucasus is one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Great Patriotic war, which lasted 442 days (from July 25, 1942 to October 9, 1943) and played an important role in the creation and completion of a radical change in the course of the Great Patriotic war. After the 900-day defense of Leningrad, the battle of the Caucasus became the second longest battle of the Great Patriotic war, " the explanatory note says.


As noted, the battle for the Caucasus ended on October 9, 1943 with a victory that had important military, political and strategic significance throughout the Great Patriotic war. During the offensive, the Soviet troops fought for about 800 kilometers and liberated an area of 200,000 square kilometers. About 281 thousand soldiers and officers of the German army were destroyed, and over 6 thousand Hitlerites were taken prisoner.


"The legislative consolidation of the Day of the defeat of the German-fascist troops in the battle for the Caucasus as a day of military glory will perpetuate the memory of this important historical event for future generations of citizens of the Russian Federation, will help strengthen friendly inter-ethnic relations between the peoples of the Caucasus, who together took part in the battles with the common enemy," the document says.
