Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking about the tragedy in Perm, said it was a huge disaster for the entire country and any condolences cannot drown out the bitterness and pain of the loss.

"I would like to begin by offering my condolences in connection with the tragedy that took place today in Perm. I am well aware that no words of sympathy can drown out the bitterness and pain of these losses, especially when we are talking about young people just starting out in life. This is a great tragedy. And not only for the families who lost their children, but for the whole country," Putin said at the beginning of his meeting with CEC head Ella Pamfilova.

"The regional and federal authorities will take all necessary steps to support the victims and the families of the deceased children," Putin added.

"Law enforcement agencies will do everything necessary to investigate this terrible crime. Find out the causes of what happened," the Russian president said.

According to the Russian investigative committee, a student opened fire at Perm State National Research University on Monday morning, killing six people and injuring 28 others. The suspect resisted law enforcement during his arrest and was wounded.
