Azimut airlines is considering the possibility of launching a direct flight from Makhachkala to one of the cities of Iran, Said Ramazanov, General Director of Makhachkala International Airport, told TASS on Wednesday.

Iranian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Russia Kazem Jalal said during his visit to Dagestan in June that Iran was interested in developing air transport links between the countries, in particular in opening a direct flight between Makhachkala and Tehran, but noted that Russian airlines currently have more opportunities for this.

"We are now working with Azimut on this direction, they are interested, they want to fly to Iran by Sukhoi Superjet 100. Azimut has actively taken up the study of these flights, they are ready to implement this program taking into account the improvement of relations between Iran and Russia," Ramazanov said, adding that the possible terms of launching the flight are not specified yet.

Besides, according to him, Iranian travel companies have expressed their readiness to launch charter flights to Makhachkala in the near future.

"Iranians promised to launch charter flights from their resort towns Sari and Gorgan. According to their information, it is planned to launch the charters this year," explained the general director of the airport.

The Makhachkala International Airport (Uytash) named after  Hero of the Soviet Union Amet-Khan Sultan is a dynamically developing organisation of the transport infrastructure of the Republic of Dagestan. In 2021 the airport served more than 2 million passengers, which is 1.4 times more than in 2020. In August 2021, an international terminal was opened at the airport, which allows to serve 190 passengers per hour, which is three times more than the capacity of the old terminal.
