Erdoğan: Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Brings Turkey to a New Level in Energy Sector

22 May

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that the construction of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant has elevated Turkey to a new level in the energy sector. He made the remarks during a conversation with journalists from his media pool upon returning from Hungary.

"We have taken revolutionary steps in the field of energy," the president said. "We are striving to make Turkey energy-independent, just as we aim for independence in other areas. We have made very serious investments in this sector. We are also working to diversify our energy sources and reach a level where we can fully meet our own energy needs. Thanks to the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, we have moved our country into a completely different league," Erdoğan said, as quoted by Anadolu Agency.

He also pointed out that the discovery of the Sakarya gas field in the Black Sea was a turning point for Turkey in terms of energy self-sufficiency. "We need to extract more natural gas more quickly and deliver it to our citizens at lower prices. This will be done. Moreover, we are acquiring new ships for seismic research and drilling. With these, we will conduct explorations not only in the Black Sea but also in other parts of the world. For instance, the ship 'Oruç Reis' is currently operating in Somalia," Erdoğan said.

According to the president, Turkey is actively seeking to expand operations using such vessels, of which the country currently possesses six or seven.
