Gazprom is negotiating with Turkey on the use of Turkish Stream for the European market

23 December 2020

"Gazprom is discussing with Turkish partners the extent to which the Turkish Stream gas export route can be used to supply the European market, Yelena Burmistrova, the general director of Gazprom Export, said at a conference with investment banks.

"We are currently negotiating on this issue with our colleagues from Turkey," she said, responding to a question about the extent to which the pipeline would be used to supply the European market.

Earlier Burmistrova admitted that Gazprom could consider the issue of transferring a part of the Turkish Stream gas volumes from the Turkish market to the European market provided the demand for gas in the country decreases. The downward trend in Russian gas withdrawal in Turkey has been observed since 2019, it was caused by internal reasons, as well as the oversaturation of the LNG market, Gazprom explained.

Later, Burmistrova said that at the end of 2020, she expects a recovery in demand, as even in the summer the withdrawal began to grow. The best year for gas supplies to Turkey was 2017, when Gazprom exported 29 billion cubic meters of gas there.

The capacity of the Turkish Stream pipeline, which is 930 km long, is 31.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The first string with an annual capacity of 15.75 billion cubic meters of gas is intended for consumers in Turkey, the second - for the countries of Southern and Southeastern Europe.
