The implementation of the Sirik Thermal Power Station (TPS) project in the Hormozgan Province in the south of Iran started on Thursday, as announced by the President of the Republic Hassan Rouhani. The ceremony was broadcast on Iranian state television.
"We are starting the Sirik TPS project," the president said.
On Wednesday, Islamic Republic Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian announced the imminent start of work on the facility and noted that the power plant will have a capacity of 1,400 megawatts. "The power plant will ensure stable operation of the power grid in the south and southeast of Iran," he added.
Relations with Russia
Russia is a very important neighbor for Iran, bilateral cooperation benefits both countries, the region and the world, Rouhani added.
"Russia is a very important neighbor for Iran, our cooperation benefits both countries, the region and the world," the IRNA news agency quoted the president as saying.
He said the two countries have had good relations in various fields since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979. The president noted the importance of Iran-Russia cooperation on Syria, Azerbaijan, the Caucasus and the Eurasian Economic Union.
On October 31, 2020, Behnam Haefinejad, the head of the Sirik TPS project, said the Iranian side had reached an agreement with a new Russian contractor to build the power plant in Hormozgan. According to him, "implementation of this project with a Russian state loan will start soon." Haefinejad added that "the size of the loan needed for this project is €1.4 billion."
The opening ceremony of the Sirik TPS construction site took place in February 2017 in the presence of Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak. The agreement to implement the project was reached by Russian and Iranian Presidents Vladimir Putin and Hassan Rouhani after negotiations in Tehran in November 2015.
