29 July 2022

An agreement on expanding the use of national currencies in mutual trade will be considered at the SCO summit to be held in Samarkand in September, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters on Friday following a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of SCO member states.

"[We] considered a number of documents that are put to the meeting. <...> The second document is important for our future work, it is a road map for expanding the use of national currencies in mutual settlements," said the foreign minister.

According to Lavrov, the draft Samarkand declaration, "which [is] in a high degree of preparation," was also reviewed at the last meeting of the Ministerial Council. "Our experts will complete this work before the upcoming summit meeting and report to the ministers, and we will already submit this draft for consideration by the heads of state," he said.

The head of the foreign ministry underlined that "the most important draft documents are related to the integration processes." "In this regard, I'll highlight the concept of the interconnection of transport corridors. This is a very practically significant agreement," added the minister.
