Rosatom plans to bring fresh nuclear fuel to the Rooppur nuclear power plant under construction in Bangladesh next year and turn it into an operational nuclear facility, Alexei Likhachev, the head of Rosatom, said this in a commentary to reporters aired Wednesday on the Rossiya-24 TV channel.

"We plan to turn the construction site into a nuclear facility next year, namely to bring in fresh nuclear fuel [to the Rooppur nuclear power plant under construction in Bangladesh]. It means one more nuclear facility on the planet," he said.

The Rooppur NPP with two VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2,400 MW is being built under a Russian design 160 kilometers from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, under a general contract dated December 25, 2015. For the first NPP in Bangladesh, a Russian project with VVER-1200 reactors has been successfully implemented at two power units of Novovoronezh NPP. It is an evolutionary project of generation 3+ that fully meets international safety requirements.
