Kabulov: Russia to be the guarantor of a peace agreement between Taliban and the United States

03 September 2019

Russia, as well as a number of other states, will be guarantors of the peace agreement between the United States and representatives of the Afghan radical movement "Taliban" (outlawed in Russia). According to the Presidential Special Representative for Afghanistan and Director of the Foreign Ministry’s Second Asian Department Zamir Kabulov, there is yet no agreement.

"Officially, it has not been confirmed by anyone, there is no date of signing", - he said, in particular.

Earlier was announced that Russia could participate in the agreement if there is the corresponding request from the USA or Taliban.

The conditions for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan remain the main contentious issue. US President Donald Trump said that in the case of a peace agreement with the Taliban he intends to leave 8.6 thousand American troops in the Islamic Republic. Now their number is 14 thousand.
