NATO plans to expand its presence in the Black Sea

01 April 2019

On April 3rd-4th, a meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers will be held in Washington, at which the expansion of the alliance’s military presence in the Black Sea will be discussed.

As Kay Bailey Hutchison, the US Permanent Representative to NATO, said at the briefing, the central topic of discussion will be «strengthening defensive actions in the Black Sea».

The reason for such a measure, according to her, was the reunification of the Crimea with Russia, as well as the incident in the Kerch Strait on November 25th, 2018.

Let’s remind, on March 29th, a group of ships of the naval group of NATO entered the Black Sea.

This mission, as stated in the alliance, was a long-planned and not related to the presidential elections in Ukraine.

In 2018, NATO ships entered the Black Sea three times as part of planned training missions.
