Kabulov: Russia to Convene Bilateral Working Group with Afghanistan in Spring

06 January

Russia plans to establish a bilateral working group on trade and economic relations with Afghanistan in the spring of 2025. This format will temporarily serve as an alternative to the intergovernmental commission, according to Zamir Kabulov, Russia’s Special Presidential Envoy for Afghanistan.

“Next spring, a bilateral working group on trade and economic relations will convene. In the current circumstances, with the regime not yet formally recognized politically, this group will essentially stand in for the intergovernmental commission on economic, trade, and other cooperation,” Kabulov said during an appearance on Solovyov Live.

It is worth noting that by a decision of the Russian Supreme Court on February 14, 2003, the Taliban movement was designated a terrorist organization, and its activities are banned in Russia.

In late December, President Vladimir Putin signed a law allowing for the temporary suspension of the prohibition on organizations listed as terrorist groups. As Leonid Slutsky, head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs and leader of the LDPR party, previously explained, these new measures aim to facilitate legal interactions between Russia and the Taliban.
