Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed with Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Hussein Abdallah al-Safadi the concept of collective security in the Persian Gulf region proposed by Russia.

"Russia and Jordan are interested in overcoming the crisis phenomena in the Persian Gulf region, in ensuring stability in this part of the Middle East. And we discussed existing initiatives in this regard, including Russian proposals to develop a system of collective security in the Persian Gulf with the participation of external players. We drew attention to the concept that Russia is promoting, which outlines the main parameters of this proposal," Lavrov said Wednesday at a joint press conference following talks with his Jordanian counterpart.

As the Minister pointed out, on the Palestinian problem, Moscow and Amman share the same opinion on the need to promote the task of a two-state solution. The countries welcome the normalization of Israel's relations with a number of Arab countries, but this should not be used to cause the creation of a Palestinian state to be consigned to oblivion, he added.
"Confirmed the role of the Quartet of international mediators, which cooperates with the special representatives of the Arab League and can play a very important role in the resumption of direct negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis on the basis of existing UN decisions and, of course, on the basis of the Arab peace initiative," the Minister stressed.

Lavrov and al-Safadi also exchanged views on the situation in Iraq, Libya and Yemen. The Russian Foreign Minister recalled that Moscow was interested in the international community's efforts to help create conditions for an effective and efficient, inclusive national dialogue in these countries.

"We have agreed to closely coordinate our steps because, as I said, the goals we pursue on all these crisis issues in the region, they practically coincide," he stressed.

Situation in Syria

According to the Minister, the situation in the Syrian settlement was discussed at great length. " We confirmed the need to ensure an approach to solving all existing problems, which would be really provided by the Syrians themselves through direct dialogue, including the constitutional committee, in full compliance with the principles approved in UN Security Council resolution 2254," he said.

"We expressed satisfaction with the formats of our cooperation in the context of the Astana process, in which Jordan participates as an observer, and discussed preparations for another meeting in that format, which is scheduled for mid-February in Sochi," Lavrov continued. -" We have very close approaches to the need to eliminate the remaining small hotbeds of terrorism in Syria, to the need to provide the conditions for the return of refugees and to begin international assistance for the reconstruction of the country".

They also discussed the role that the Arab League could contribute to the creation of the most favorable external conditions for the solution of all these problems, which the Syrian people are facing, the Russian Foreign Minister informed.
