Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has called for efforts not against the UN Charter, which he deems fair, but against those in the West who violate its principles.
“The problem isn’t with the UN Charter itself—it’s a fair and balanced document. The problem is with those, primarily the US, Anglo-Saxon nations, and their allies, who manipulate or ignore its principles to serve their own interests,” Lavrov stated at a meeting of the Russian International Affairs Council.
He pointed out that Western nations often selectively apply the Charter, using it when convenient while disregarding it when it doesn’t align with their agenda. “The Charter must be upheld in its entirety,” he stressed.
Lavrov also underscored the importance of reaffirming the post-war international legal system, especially in a year that marks the 80th anniversary of both the Great Victory and the founding of the United Nations. As commemorations for the Yalta and Potsdam conferences approach, he argued that the world must stand firm in preserving the legal framework that has shaped global stability for decades.
According to Lavrov, the UN’s legal foundations remain relevant in today’s multipolar world, where mutual respect among nations is crucial. “Apply this logic to the Kiev regime, and the hypocrisy becomes obvious to anyone who values international law,” he said. “If dismantling the Yalta-Potsdam system means dismantling the UN Charter, that would be a huge step backward. In today’s world, reaching a new, universally accepted legal consensus would be nearly impossible.”
