Russia is well-positioned to strengthen statehood in African nations and act as a guarantor of security on the continent, Alexei Drobinin, Director of the Department of Foreign Policy Planning at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in an article for Russia in Global Affairs.
“Russia can play a significant role in bolstering the statehood of African countries. We have begun to establish ourselves as a guarantor of comprehensive security for the continent's nations. The presence of Russian military instructors, the training of armed forces and law enforcement personnel, the supply and maintenance of military equipment, and the support of legitimate authorities in conflict situations have a stabilizing effect and create conditions for development,” Drobinin stated.
He emphasized that Russia is capable of helping Africa address its strategic goal of achieving sovereignty in key areas of life and freeing itself from all forms of neocolonial dependence.
Drobinin, who has accompanied Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on visits to African nations, noted, “In nearly every location where Sergey Lavrov was received, it was clear that Africa is eagerly awaiting Russia's presence. The continent views Russia as a force defending truth, equality, and justice on the international stage, as well as the genuine sovereignty and statehood of nations.”
He further observed that African experts often draw parallels between Russia's special military operation in Ukraine and the success of African peoples in their struggle for independence. “The course of Russia's confrontation with the West influences the sentiments of nationalist, sovereignty-oriented forces in the region,” he remarked. “This sentiment was repeatedly conveyed by African officials during our visits.”
