03 November 2021

Yandex has signed an agreement with Majid Al Futtaim mall operator to launch grocery delivery using robots from Carrefour supermarkets in Dubai, the Russian company said.

Yandex has signed a letter of intent to develop drone technology with Majid Al Futtaim, one of the largest operators of malls, retail and leisure in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia. As part of the agreement, Yandex will launch robot-assisted grocery delivery in Dubai," the report said.

The company notes that from 2022, as part of the pilot program, customers in Dubai will be able to order delivery by robots from Carrefour supermarkets, tracking the movement of the order will be possible in the application of the store.

"The partnership with Yandex will allow Carrefour to become the first grocery retailer to use unmanned robots to deliver orders in the region," the press release states.

The delivery robots plan a route independently, see vehicles and pedestrians, and travel at speeds of up to 8 kilometers per hour on sidewalks or other pedestrian areas.

"Autonomous delivery can improve people's lives in cities and allow companies to optimize their logistics and cut costs. Yandex robots have already delivered tens of thousands of orders in the US and Russia. We appreciate the support of the RTA (Dubai Roads and Transport Authority - ed.) and together with Majid Al Futtaim we will explore the possibilities to introduce robotic delivery in the daily life of Dubai," Dmitry Polishchuk, head of Yandex drone technology, said in the report.
