Media: Cairo Conference on Gaza Reconstruction Postponed

26 November

The international conference on Gaza reconstruction scheduled for late November in Egypt has been postponed due to the ongoing situation in the Palestinian enclave, according to pan-Arab newspaper Asharq al-Awsat citing an Egyptian source.

The source confirmed the conference “will not take place as scheduled at month's end” and will be held at a later date. Explaining the reasons for the delay, the interlocutor noted that “many countries are seeking guarantees that the destruction in Gaza will not be repeated, and these guarantees have not been provided nor will they be provided currently given Israel's continued escalation and repeated violations.” The source also mentioned that “parallel efforts are currently underway” regarding the situation in the Israeli-controlled territories of the enclave.

In March, Cairo hosted an emergency Arab League summit that adopted a Gaza reconstruction plan involving phased reconstruction without displacing Palestinians. Preliminary estimates indicate reconstruction would cost $53 billion. Egypt had also called for an international conference coordinated with the UN to support the reconstruction plan once hostilities cease. In October, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's intention to host this forum.
