The overwhelming majority of buildings that housed schools in the Gaza Strip have been completely destroyed since the start of Israeli military operations in the enclave in October 2023, according to a representative from the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Palestine.
"97% of school buildings in Gaza have been fully destroyed as a result of the war in the enclave," the UNICEF representative stated in remarks reported by Al Jazeera. The official added that according to the agency's data, "over the past two years, more than 670,000 students in Gaza have been unable to attend educational institutions."
The UNICEF representative further noted that Israeli authorities have "prohibited the delivery of any education-related materials into the sector since October 2023."
