Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has stated that the Israeli government is fully aware that its every action in the region is illegal and fuels instability. He made these remarks to journalists upon returning from the G20 summit in South Africa.
"Syria's territorial integrity is fundamental for us. The future of Syria will be determined by the Syrian people. Turkey understands better than any other nation the potential cost of even minor disruptions and instability in Syria," Erdoğan stated. "We seek peace, stability, and security in every square meter of our region, particularly in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon. The Israeli government knows that every step it takes in the region is unlawful and generates instability. Focus on what Turkey is doing, not on what the Israeli press writes," he added, responding to recent statements from Israeli officials directed at Ankara.
Erdoğan further emphasized that Turkey will continue to "take steps in the interest of national security and domestic peace," including in the context of regional developments. "We do not wish to face similar threats and dangers [of regional instability, particularly in Syria] again, but if we do, we will take all necessary measures. We do not infringe upon anyone's territory or sovereignty, but we will do what we deem necessary within our own strategic priorities," he concluded.
