The UN Security Council resolution endorsing US President Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza represents an opportunity to affirm Palestinian rights and support international efforts to stabilize the enclave, according to Munther al-Khayek, Gaza representative of Fatah, one of the two largest Palestinian factions alongside Hamas.
Al-Khayek welcomed the adopted resolution as "a step toward new political horizons for the Palestinian people after months of [Israeli] aggression." He stated that the resolution "provides an opportunity that must be utilized to advance toward a better future for the Palestinian people, strengthening their legitimate national rights and supporting global efforts to end the [Israeli] occupation of Gaza and establish a just peace."
The Fatah official emphasized that the resolution incorporates fundamental principles for Gaza's future: reinforcing the ceasefire, delivering humanitarian aid to residents, recognizing the right to self-determination and statehood, and enhancing the role of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), headquartered in Ramallah in the West Bank.
The Security Council had earlier adopted the US-drafted resolution with 13 votes in favor, while Russia and China abstained.
The PNA leadership expressed support for the document and readiness to implement it, confirming its commitment to "assume full responsibility."
Meanwhile, Hamas, which had previously governed Gaza, rejected the resolution, asserting that it "completely ignores the political and humanitarian demands and rights of the Palestinian people, particularly Gaza residents." The movement also opposed the proposed international trusteeship mechanism and the presence of foreign forces in the enclave, insisting that any international forces should be deployed solely along the border to separate parties and monitor the ceasefire.
