Presidents of Egypt and Russia to Participate in Reactor Installation Ceremony for El-Dabaa NPP

18 November

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Russian President Vladimir Putin will participate via video conference in the ceremonial installation of the reactor pressure vessel for the first power unit of the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant. The announcement was made by the Egyptian President's office.

The statement, published on el-Sisi's official social media page, confirmed the leaders' virtual participation in the milestone event. The office further indicated that the two sides are expected to sign an agreement for the supply of nuclear fuel for the plant, a step described by Cairo as "decisive in advancing toward the completion of the nuclear power station."

The El-Dabaa NPP, Egypt's first nuclear power plant, is being constructed by Russia's Rosatom State Corporation in the city of El-Dabaa, Matrouh Governorate, on the Mediterranean coast approximately 300 kilometers northwest of Cairo. The plant will consist of four power units, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts, equipped with advanced Generation III+ VVER-1200 pressurized water reactors—a proven Russian technology with reference plants already in successful operation worldwide.

The project is being implemented under a comprehensive contractual framework that entered into force on December 11, 2017. Under these obligations, Russia will not only construct the plant but also supply nuclear fuel throughout its operational lifetime. Additionally, Rosatom will assist Egyptian partners in training personnel and provide support during the first 10 years of the plant's operation and maintenance. A separate contract covers the construction of specialized storage facilities and the supply of containers for spent nuclear fuel.
