Avar language to be added to Yandex.Translator

18 February 2022

The languages of the peoples of Dagestan will be added to Yandex.Translator in honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Rasul Gamzatov.  The Avar language spoken by the poet himself will be added among the first, Tamerlan Buganov, the republic's acting minister of digital development, told TASS on Friday.

"As part of a visit to Yandex's central office in Moscow we got acquainted with a number of developments, including discussing educational projects Yandex.Lyceum, Yandex.Praktikum, Yandex.360. In the course of the meeting with Dmitry Rastvorov, director for promotion of educational initiatives in the organisation, we agreed on the possibility of adding languages of the peoples of Dagestan to Yandex.Translator. The first one will be the Avar language", Buganov said.

Centenary of the poet

The centenary of Gamzatov's birth will be celebrated in 2023, and an organizing committee has been approved in accordance with a presidential decree.

Earlier, the head of the region, Sergei Melikov, invited President Vladimir Putin to the celebration of the poet's anniversary. According to Melikov, Putin's visit to the republic will raise the status of the celebrations "and once again show the world that Gamzatov is a universally recognized poet of great Russia."

Gamzatov was born in the Dagestani village of Tsada on September 8, 1923. He wrote dozens of poetry, prose and journalism books in Avar and Russian, including "High Stars", "Pismena", "Year of my birth". Many of the poet's poems were set to music. Gamzatov died November 3, 2003, and was buried in an old Muslim cemetery in the Dagestan village of Tarki at the foot of the mountain Tarki-Tau.
