China and Kazakhstan lead the list of countries sending the largest numbers of students to Russian universities as of the end of 2024, the Russian Ministry of Education and Science told TASS.
According to the ministry, the top five countries for incoming foreign students at that time were China with 13,687 students, Kazakhstan with 3,972, Uzbekistan with 3,760, Kyrgyzstan with 3,537, and India with 2,612.
The ministry also reported that by October 1, 2024, there were 2,317 students from European Union countries enrolled across Russian universities. Overall, the total number of international students in Russia reached 414,600 from 182 countries — a rise of nearly 32,000 compared to 2022.
Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Konstantin Mogilevskiy told TASS that Russian students studying in Western institutions frequently encounter various forms of discrimination. He noted that the ministry is assisting those who wish to return to Russia and continue their studies at domestic universities.
