Head of the Russian Academy of Sciences Says BRICS Peoples Expect Science to Defeat Hunger and Infections

29 May

The peoples of the BRICS countries look to science to address critical issues such as food security and health care, according to Gennady Krasnikov, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Speaking at a meeting of heads of the BRICS academies of sciences, Krasnikov emphasized the significant expectations placed on the scientific community to tackle global challenges.

"Requests to the scientific community from the peoples of our countries are related to the solution of global problems. These are climate change, food security, health care and fight against infections, meeting the growing demand for energy resources," Krasnikov noted.

The meeting, part of a broader series of events under Russia's 2024 BRICS presidency, underscores the collaborative efforts of the BRICS nations in scientific advancement. Krasnikov highlighted the continuity of these meetings, which began in 2018 under the initiative of the Academy of Sciences of South Africa.

This year's forum is particularly noteworthy as it coincides with the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a milestone recognized internationally by UNESCO. For the first time, the meeting saw the in-person participation of representatives from the Academies of Sciences of Egypt and Iran, held at the Russian Academy of Sciences' Presidium building on Leninsky Prospekt.
