UNESCO has confirmed that several cultural heritage sites in Iran have sustained damage during military operations involving Israel and the United States, The New York Times reports.

"UNESCO is extremely concerned by reports of destruction affecting cultural heritage sites in the Middle East, particularly in Iran and neighboring states," the statement reads.

According to the organization, the damage affects the Chehel Sotoun Palace and the Jameh Mosque in Isfahan, the Golestan Palace in Tehran’s historic center, as well as structures near the prehistoric monuments of the Khorramabad Valley. The newspaper reports that the damage to these historical treasures has sparked "fury, sadness, and fear" among the Iranian population.
