Chinese Foreign Ministry: Indonesia’s BRICS Membership Will Positively Impact Member States

07 January

Indonesia’s entry into BRICS aligns with the broader trend of the Global South’s rise and will contribute positively to the development of the bloc’s member states, according to a statement from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“China warmly welcomes and extends heartfelt congratulations to Indonesia on becoming a full member of BRICS. Indonesia's official membership aligns with the shared interests of BRICS countries and the Global South, bringing positive contributions to the BRICS mechanism,” stated the ministry’s website. “The inclusion of new members reflects the historical trend of the Global South’s rise.”

The statement highlights Indonesia as a “major developing country and a significant force within the Global South,” which “fully shares the spirit” of BRICS and actively engages with participants in the expanded BRICS+ format. “BRICS is a vital platform for strengthening solidarity and fostering cooperation among Global South countries, as well as a key force driving changes in global governance,” the ministry added.

China emphasized that the bloc “has always adhered to the principles of multilateralism,” advocating fair and just interactions while promoting common development. Beijing expressed its willingness to deepen pragmatic partnerships with Jakarta and other BRICS members to further enhance the group’s growth.

BRICS Expansion

Earlier, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which assumed the rotating BRICS presidency on January 1, announced that Indonesia had joined the bloc as a full member. Leaders of the BRICS nations approved Indonesia’s membership during the summit held in Johannesburg in August 2023.

BRICS was established in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2011. In 2024, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Ethiopia also became members of the group.
