CSTO Conducts Strategic Command-Staff Training on Central Asia Stability

12 March

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is currently holding a strategic command-staff training from March 12-13, focusing on stabilizing the situation in the Central Asian region of collective security amidst growing threats of a crisis situation, Vladislav Shchegrikovich, the Press Secretary of the CSTO Joint Staff, told TASS.

"A military-political and strategic training situation has been created for the training, with several conventions adopted and the names of states and international organizations changed to maintain the confidentiality of the exercise. The training simulates one of the options for escalating potential threats in the organization's area of responsibility, envisioning a crisis situation in a hypothetical state of the Central Asian region of collective security," the report detailed.

CSTO Secretary-General Imangali Tasmagambetov highlighted at the event that the training "is conducted in a complex international environment." "Conflicts are escalating in various regions globally, including within the CSTO area of responsibility, and  modern crises are increasingly adopting a hybrid nature, necessitating comprehensive approaches to resolution," he pointed out. One of the training's most important goals is to clarify the algorithm of collective anti-crisis actions and assess their effectiveness, considering the provisions of the decision "On Measures to Develop the CSTO Crisis Response System" adopted by the CSTO Collective Security Council on November 23, 2023.

The strategic command-staff training is led by Colonel General Andrei Serdyukov, Chief of the Joint Staff. "This training is a key event determining the initial data for the preparation of the command-staff exercise with the CSTO peacekeeping forces 'Unbreakable Brotherhood - 2024,' scheduled to be held in Kazakhstan in the fall of this year," he noted during the event.

According to the training's concept, the President of the CSTO Collective Security Council was addressed to the Chairman of the CSTO Collective Security Council with a request for assistance. Following the extraordinary session of the Collective Security Council, a decision was made to conduct a peacekeeping operation. To implement this decision, a crisis response center and operational groups of the organization's member states have been deployed. The training also covers the preparation of proposals and draft decisions by CSTO bodies on the conduct of a peacekeeping operation, with particular attention paid to the formation of the Collective Peacekeeping Forces, their regrouping and deployment in the conflict area, and the provision of military and technical assistance.
