Emergency Pan-Arab Summit on Palestine to Be Held in Cairo

04 March

An emergency summit of the Arab League will take place on Tuesday in Cairo, with the focus on the Palestinian issue as a whole, and specifically the situation in Gaza and the future of the enclave. The Egyptian government’s reconstruction plan for Gaza is expected to be the central topic of the summit.

According to the Al-Qahira Al-Ikhbariya TV channel, Egypt’s proposal envisions a three- to five-year process. In the initial stages, humanitarian zones will be established in Gaza, where tents and trailers will provide temporary shelter for Palestinians while their homes, destroyed in Israeli airstrikes, are rebuilt. The channel also reports that Gulf countries, Egypt, and Jordan agreed on the project’s estimated cost of $53 billion during an informal meeting in Riyadh on February 21. However, no details have been disclosed so far regarding which countries will contribute funds or in what proportions.

If Egypt secures unanimous support from all Arab countries, the reconstruction plan will be presented to the international community. According to Al-Qahira Al-Ikhbariya, a special ministerial committee could be created for this purpose. Committee members would embark on a global diplomatic tour to seek backing from world leaders, after which they would present the plan to the US administration. If the White House responds positively, the Arab ministers are expected to ask Washington to help implement the plan — including allowing American companies to participate in Gaza’s reconstruction.

The summit in Cairo will also discuss a final proposal for the creation of a Palestinian state. According to experts, once Gaza is fully rebuilt, an international peace conference on Palestine should be held. By that time, Arab leaders should have developed a clear and comprehensive vision for the future independent State of Palestine, including a long-term truce with Israel and a political resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Egyptian analyst and columnist Ashraf al-Ashri, quoted by Al-Qahira Al-Ikhbariya, believes that the international community would be more enthusiastic about implementing the two-state solution if they see that the Arab side has a clear and detailed plan for making it a reality.

About the Emergency Summit

The emergency  summit was convened at the request of Palestine, following recent statements by US President Donald Trump suggesting that Washington is considering long-term control over Gaza and resettling its population to other countries in the region. Initially, the high-level meeting was scheduled for February 27, but it was postponed until March 4 due to the need to finalize the agenda and logistical challenges.

Ahmed al-Sharaa, Syria’s transitional president, is expected to attend the summit. On February 24, his office confirmed that he had received a personal invitation from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. However, his office has not officially confirmed this invitation so far.
