Foreign Ministry: Moscow has no hidden agenda for the Middle East settlement

26 June 2020

The sequence of Moscow's position on the Middle East settlement can be traced to the chronology of voting in the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly. This is stated in the comments of the Russian Foreign Ministry in response to the publication in the Israeli edition of The Jerusalem Post that Russia was allegedly ready to block the corresponding draft American resolution in 2016.

"Russia does not and cannot have any" hidden agenda " on this issue. This is well known to all our partners in the Middle East settlement. Other interpretations are unacceptable," the comment says.

"First, the Russian Federation firmly supports a just, comprehensive and sustainable Palestinian-Israeli settlement, which should be achieved through direct negotiations between the parties on the basis of a generally recognized international legal framework and under the auspices of the United Nations. The immutability of this principled position can be traced through the analysis of the chronology of our vote on all resolutions of the UN Security Council and General Assembly related to the Middle East settlement, " the Russian Foreign Ministry added. "Secondly, the proclamation of a Palestinian state within the borders of 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital was recognized by the Soviet Union and, consequently, by the Russian Federation as its successor in November 1988."

As indicated in Moscow, the publication in the Israeli edition is dictated by the desire to distort historical events in favor of the interests of "certain groups of influence".
