The Palestinian Hamas movement has reached an agreement to phase out the release of Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons, as part of a new accord to swap hostages held by them in the Gaza Strip. This information was disclosed by the Al Hadath TV channel.
According to it, the movement has consented to the gradual release of Palestinian prisoners from jails as part of a fresh initiative negotiated during a recent meeting in Paris. It is important to note that in the initial stages of the agreement, Hamas "will not insist on the release of those serving lengthy prison sentences."
Nevertheless, Al Hadath sources indicate that the Palestinian movement "has not yet given full approval to the proposals developed in Paris."
Previously, the Hamas leadership stated that it would only enter into talks regarding the release of hostages in Gaza if certain conditions were satisfied, including the simultaneous release of all Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody.
On January 28, Agence France Presse reported that William Burns, the director of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), met with representatives from Egypt, Israel, and Qatar in Paris. Subsequently, NBC News reported that the conference participants agreed upon a new deal between Hamas and Israel, which entails a phased exchange of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners, a ceasefire, and the provision of humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip. Hamas confirmed on January 30 that it had received a proposal for a deal with Israel from the Paris meeting.
