Hamas Demands Release of Key Palestinian Figures in Truce Negotiations

09 August

Hamas has submitted its conditions for a truce agreement with Israel in the Gaza Strip through mediators. According to the Egyptian portal Al-Youm as-Sabia, Hamas's demands include the release of prominent Palestinian prisoners.

The conditions specifically call for the release of Marwan Barghouti, a leader of the Fatah movement, and Ahmed Saadat, the Secretary-General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). Sources indicate that these demands reflect "Hamas's aim to foster national unity among Palestinians."

Additionally, Hamas is seeking the release of all Palestinian movement leaders imprisoned under false pretenses, as well as all female and juvenile hostages, particularly those held after October 7, 2023.
