Indonesia Aims to Contribute as a Full Member of BRICS

09 January

Indonesia plans to play an active role in BRICS as a full member, according to a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Indonesia, with its growing and diversified economy, is committed to contributing to the BRICS agenda, including promoting economic resilience, technological collaboration, sustainable development, and addressing global challenges such as climate change, food security, and healthcare,” the ministry stated.

The statement emphasized Jakarta's dedication to maintaining close cooperation with all BRICS member states and other countries to foster a fair and prosperous world.

On January 6, Brazil's Foreign Ministry, under the country’s rotating BRICS presidency, announced that Indonesia had officially joined the group as a full member. The country’s candidacy was approved during the BRICS summit in Johannesburg in August 2023.

Previously, the Russian foreign ministry reported that starting in 2025, several countries, including Indonesia, would join BRICS as partner states. Other partners named include Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

BRICS was established in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China. South Africa joined in 2011. In 2024, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, and Ethiopia also became members of the group.
