Indonesia Urges US to Take Further Action to Halt Atrocities in Gaza

14 November 2023

Indonesia is urging the United States to "do more to stop the atrocities in Gaza," as stated by Indonesian President Joko Widodo during a meeting with US President Joe Biden at the White House on Monday.

"Indonesia seeks a partnership that contributes to regional and global peace and security. Therefore, Indonesia urges the US to take more decisive action to halt the atrocities in Gaza. A ceasefire in the Gaza Strip must be secured for the sake of humanity," emphasized Widodo.

He stated, "The US is one of Indonesia's most crucial partners. We have committed to elevating the relationship to the status of a comprehensive strategic partnership. However, it is important that we imbue it with real meaning. Economic cooperation, particularly on matters related to supply chains, is a priority for Indonesia".

On his part, Biden expressed confidence that the declaration of a comprehensive strategic partnership between Washington and Jakarta would usher in a "new era" in their bilateral relations "across the full spectrum of issues." This involves, as he explained, reaching "the highest possible level of cooperation." The US president highlighted the expansion of US-Indonesia security cooperation, especially in the maritime sphere, and an increase in collaboration to establish sustainable supply chains. Biden also stated, "In addition, we will work with ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations - TASS) to promote a free, open, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region." He conveyed gratitude to Indonesia for its leadership in ASEAN this year.
