Iran Blames NATO for the Conflict in Ukraine

11 July

Iran places the blame for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine squarely on the NATO alliance. This assertion was made by Nasser Kanani, the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

"Regrettably, the situation in Ukraine is a direct consequence of the policies and aggressive actions undertaken by NATO, primarily led by the United States, which continue to this day," Kanani's remarks were reported on the Telegram channel of the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

Kanani underscored that the accusations of Iran providing military support to Russia, as mentioned in the final declaration of NATO countries following their summit in Washington, are "completely baseless and politically motivated."  The summit of NATO leaders was held in the American capital from July 9 to 11.

"Iran has consistently pursued a strategy of playing a constructive and enduring role in maintaining security in the region and across the globe," Kanani stated. He further argued that any efforts to connect the Ukrainian conflict with the bilateral cooperation between Iran and Russia are merely intended "to justify the continuation of Western military aid to Ukraine."

The diplomat reiterated that the Islamic Republic "has not supplied Russia with drones for use in the Ukrainian conflict" and continues to advocate for a political resolution to the crisis and the establishment of enduring peace.

Both Moscow and Tehran have consistently denied claims that Russia has used Iranian drones in Ukraine. Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed such reports as misinformation, emphasizing that the Russian military employs domestically produced aircraft. In November 2022, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian acknowledged that Iran had indeed supplied drones to Russia, but in limited quantities and several months prior to the commencement of the special military operation.
