Iran delivers its comments on US response to EU coordinator

02 September 2022

Iran sent its comments to the US response on reviving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran's nuclear program to EU Coordinator Enrique Mora, Fars News Agency reported on Friday, citing Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani.

According to the diplomat, the text passed to the EU representative, prepared in response to the US proposals, "contains a constructive approach aimed at  finalizing the negotiations. The foreign ministry spokesman pointed out that "the expert team of Iran carefully examined the US response," and "Iran's responses, after evaluation at different levels, were compiled and delivered to the coordinator tonight."

The agency explains that Tehran was responding to Washington's earlier response to the parties' draft final agreement in the context of the JCPOA negotiations in Vienna.

The JCPOA was signed with Iran in 2015 to address the crisis over its nuclear developments by the permanent UN Security Council Five and Germany. Previous US President Donald Trump decided in 2018 to withdraw from the arrangement. Current US leader Joe Biden has repeatedly signaled a willingness to bring Washington back into the nuclear deal with Tehran. Russia, Britain, Germany, China, the US and France have been negotiating with Iran in Vienna since last April to restore the JCPOA to its original form.

After several rounds of talks in Vienna, the sides were presented with the text of final agreements. In this regard, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna, said that this document would be ratified and would enter into force if all participants had no objections to its content.
