Nasser Kanani, the spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, has called on the international community to investigate "this clear war crime" in response to Israel's recent military operation at the al-Shifa medical complex in the northern Gaza Strip.
Citing footage of severe destruction in the al-Shifa neighborhood, Kanani wrote, "Images of al-Shifa hospital in the Gaza Strip after its two-week siege by the Zionist regime's army, witness testimonies, as well as published videos and reports on the scale of destruction, torture, killings, and the number of detained Palestinians in this hospital are horrifying and shocking. It is imperative that an international investigation be held."
Kanani questioned whether prominent human rights advocates would support an international investigation into the scale of the war crime or if a selective and discriminatory approach to human rights would once again prevail.
On April 1, the Israeli military announced the completion of an operation near the al-Shifa hospital compound in the northern Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that the hospital had become "the central terrorist headquarters of the Hamas movement." During the operation, he said, the military eliminated more than 200 armed radicals. The IDF maintained that soldiers did not harm civilians, patients, or medical staff. However, according to the World Health Organization, 21 patients have died at al-Shifa in the past two weeks. The Palestinian Health Ministry characterized the military operation at al-Shifa as a violation of international humanitarian law, while the Iranian Foreign Ministry denounced it as an act of barbarism.
