Iranian and Pakistani Ambassadors to Resume Duty on January 26 Amid Diplomatic Developments

22 January

In a joint statement, the foreign ministries of Iran and Pakistan announced that the ambassadors of both countries will resume their duties by January 26, 2024. The decision follows a telephone conversation between the foreign ministers of Pakistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The statement reads, "Following a telephone conversation between the foreign ministers of Pakistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran, it was agreed that the ambassadors of both countries may return to their posts by January 26, 2024." Additionally, the statement revealed that Iranian Foreign Minister Hosein Amir Abdollahian will visit Pakistan on January 29, 2024, at the invitation of Pakistani Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani.

This development comes after tensions escalated when the Iranian Armed Forces struck two headquarters of the terrorist group Jaish al-Zolm on Pakistani territory on January 16. The operation, which utilized drones and missiles, prompted condemnation from Pakistan, terming it a violation of the country's air borders with potentially severe consequences. In response, Pakistan recalled its ambassador from Tehran on January 17. The Iranian ambassador, who was in Iran at the time, was also advised not to return to Islamabad for the time being.

On January 18, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry disclosed that the country's Armed Forces conducted an anti-terrorist operation targeting extremist hideouts in Iran's Sistan and Baluchistan province. Unfortunately, the regional authorities reported casualties, with 10 people, including four children, losing their lives in the attack.
