Iran's MFA proposes severing relations with countries involved in Quran desecration

01 August 2023

Iranian Foreign Minister Hosein Amir Abdollahian has suggested that member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) should sever diplomatic relations with states that repeatedly engage in acts of desecration of the Quran.

"I have proposed the introduction of international criminal responsibility for these actions, along with sending OIC delegations to these two countries [Sweden and Denmark]. Strict punishments should be imposed on the perpetrators, and if such actions are repeated, we should consider lowering diplomatic relations or severing them, and imposing an embargo on the purchase of goods," the minister stated on Twitter.

On Monday, the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers held an extraordinary online meeting to address the issue of Quran burning incidents in Sweden and Denmark. During the opening session, OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha expressed disappointment at the lack of measures taken by Stockholm and Copenhagen to prevent the repeated desecration of the Quran, allowing such actions to persist. Following the meeting, the ministers adopted a resolution expressing concern over the resurgence of racist movements and far-right extremism, calling for an immediate halt to extremist actions. The Council also urged the international community to take necessary steps to prevent the desecration of religious shrines, including the Quran.

The OIC Foreign Ministers' Council was held amid an incident in Stockholm, where two Iraqi migrants, Salwan Momika and Salwan Najem, who are already under criminal investigation for incitement to hatred due to their previous similar demonstrations, set fire to several pages of the Quran.
