Russia stands with Iran in the protection of its national interests and sovereignty, Federation Council Deputy Speaker Konstantin Kosachev affirmed during a meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali.
The senator noted that Iran has faced persistent pressure from the United States for decades. "Throughout this time, the people and leadership of the country have demonstrated a profound respect for their own sovereignty and national interests, defending Iran's standing in the modern world. In this regard, you can firmly count on Russia's support," Kosachev stated, according to the Federation Council’s press service.
The meeting covered a range of bilateral and international issues, including the third round of indirect talks between Iran and the US currently underway in Geneva regarding the Iranian nuclear program. Kosachev remarked that the ideal outcome of these negotiations would be a de-escalation of the situation surrounding Iran.
"Iran has every right to develop its peaceful nuclear program. Should concrete agreements be reached in Geneva, Russia stands ready to provide Iran with the necessary support to implement them," he added.
