The Kremlin is concerned about the development of the situation in Afghanistan because only disturbing news comes from there, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
"The situation in Afghanistan is extremely alarming. The situation in Afghanistan is a subject of our concern, and we are in constant contact with our partners in the CSTO, together with the countries bordering Afghanistan. Of course, we monitor how the situation develops. So far we receive only alarming news," Peskov told reporters.
In Afghanistan, government forces are confronting militants of the Taliban (a movement recognized as terrorist and banned in the Russian Federation), who have seized large territories in rural areas and launched attacks on major cities. Instability in Afghanistan is increasing against the background of the US administration's promises to complete the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan by September 11. In 2020, Washington and Taliban officials signed the first peace agreement in more than 18 years of war in Doha. It provides for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan in 14 months and the start of an inter-Afghan dialogue after a prisoner exchange.
