The official website of the Russian president has published a statement of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Chairman of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Collective Security Council, about the decision to send the organization's collective peacekeeping forces to Kazakhstan.

The publication was posted on the portal of the president on Thursday night.

"In connection with the appeal of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K. - J. K. Tokayev and in view of the threat to the national security and sovereignty of the Republic of Kazakhstan, caused among other things by interference from outside, the CSTO Collective Security Council in accordance with Article 4 of the Collective Security Treaty decided to send CSTO collective peacekeeping forces to the Republic of Kazakhstan for a limited period to stabilize and normalize the situation in that country," the statement reads.

Earlier, the text of the document was posted by the Armenian prime minister on his Facebook page.

On Wednesday, Pashinyan began consultations with CSTO leaders on the situation in Kazakhstan. Earlier Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev asked CSTO leaders for help "in overcoming <...> terrorist threat," describing the unrest in the republic as an act of aggression.

The Collective Security Treaty provides that in the event of aggression against one of the members of the organization, the others should immediately provide it with "necessary assistance, including military assistance," and provide support "with the means at their disposal". The CSTO now includes Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in addition to Kazakhstan.
