Kyrgyz Parliament voted to appoint Sadyr Zhaparov as Prime Minister

14 October 2020

During the extraordinary session held on Wednesday, deputies of the Kyrgyz Parliament approved the candidacy of Sadyr Zhaparov for the post of the Prime Minister of the country, the TASS correspondent from the conference hall reports.

Parliamentarians also unanimously approved the structure, program and composition of the new government. Despite Zhaparov's earlier statements about his intention to retain the previous composition of the Cabinet, it has changed a lot. Almost all deputy prime ministers, except for Aida Ismailova, lost their posts. Only the Minister of Economy, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, and the Minister of Justice also retained their posts. A number of ministers in Zhaparov's cabinet had previously led the ministries. In particular, Foreign Minister Ruslan Kazakbayev had already headed the Foreign Ministry from 2010 to 2012. And First Deputy Prime Minister Artem Novikov in 2017-2018 was the Minister of Economy and three times adviser to prime ministers.

Zhaparov and his government were approved by the Parliament at the third attempt. The first two were taken by deputies on October 6 and 10, but their decision was questioned because there was no quorum during those sessions.

Prospects of the new government

According to Kyrgyz law, the government automatically resigns after parliamentary elections in the country. That is why many local politicians now call the new Cabinet of Ministers of the republic technical, as in the near future the republic should hold repeated elections to the supreme legislative body.
