Lavrov and Cavusoglu call on all forces in Afghanistan to secure the country

18 August 2021

Russian Foreign Minister and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed the situation in Afghanistan by phone on Wednesday and called on key national forces to ensure security and law and order in the country.

"The sides discussed in detail the situation in Afghanistan, expressed mutual interest in stabilizing the situation and called on the key national forces to ensure security and law and order in the country as soon as possible," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

As indicated in the diplomatic office, the sides also touched upon other issues of the international and bilateral agenda. "The schedule of upcoming bilateral contacts at the highest and high level was considered," the ministry added.

Following the US announcement of the end of the armed operation in Afghanistan and the beginning of the withdrawal of troops, the radical Taliban (banned in Russia) launched an offensive against government forces and by August 15 had entered the capital Kabul without a fight. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani left the country after withdrawing from power. Western countries evacuate their citizens, including diplomats.
