Lavrov Arrives in Tehran for Official Visit

25 February

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has landed in Tehran for an official visit, according to TASS. His plane touched down at the Iranian capital's airport following his recent diplomatic trip to Turkey, where he held talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and was received by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Lavrov’s discussions with his Iranian counterpart would focus on bilateral cooperation, now officially recognized as a comprehensive strategic partnership. Special attention will be given to expanding economic and trade collaboration, particularly in energy and transportation projects.

In addition to bilateral ties, the ministers will exchange views on key international issues, including Syria, the South Caucasus, Afghanistan, Yemen, the Persian Gulf region, Middle East peace efforts, Caspian affairs, and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear program.

This marks Lavrov’s second visit to Tehran in recent months, following his participation in the "3+3" regional platform for the South Caucasus in October 2023.

Russia and Iran: A Growing Partnership

The Russian Foreign Ministry has emphasized that Moscow and Tehran share similar perspectives on global and regional issues, forming the foundation of their political dialogue.

President Vladimir Putin has stressed the importance of deepening Russia-Iran relations based on equality, mutual respect, and shared interests. Following his January meeting in Moscow with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Putin highlighted that their bilateral cooperation continues to grow steadily.

For his part, Pezeshkian underscored Iran’s commitment to strengthening ties with Russia, recognizing its significant role in Tehran’s regional strategy. He noted the increasing number of diplomatic exchanges between the two nations, expressing gratitude for Moscow’s engagement.

On January 17, Russia and Iran took a major step in formalizing their alliance by signing an Interstate Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
