Lavrov: Russia Continues Cooperation with African Nations Despite Sanctions

12 February

Russia continues to seek and successfully find ways to maintain cooperation with African countries, despite Western sanctions, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov following talks with Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Youssef Sharif.

“Of course, we seek and, in most cases, find opportunities to continue our mutually beneficial cooperation with African countries and others, regardless of the criminal, unilateral, and illegitimate actions of the collective West,” Lavrov stated, addressing the impact of sanctions on partnerships with African nations.

He noted that Western sanctions have revealed the “unreliability of those who impose them” and their willingness to undermine the principles of globalization previously promoted by the West. “Fair competition, the presumption of innocence, property rights, free market forces—all of this has been discarded overnight,” Lavrov emphasized.

Looking forward, Lavrov pointed to the broader question of how to develop the global economy—”whether with the West or perhaps better without it.” He underscored the importance of establishing “backup mechanisms for banking operations, logistics, and insurance.”

While he dismissed the likelihood of entirely new traditional currencies, Lavrov highlighted the growing significance of digital currencies, as well as supply chains and financial systems resilient to external vulnerabilities.

“The globalization that the West once advised and even imposed on everyone has been dismantled by their own hands,” Lavrov concluded.
