Lavrov: Russia Hopes Israel–Iran War Has Ended

04 July

Moscow hopes the conflict between Iran and Israel has come to an end, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said. However, he cautioned that the “party of war” in the Middle East remains active.

“We very much hope that the so-called 12-day war is over,” Lavrov said at a press conference following talks with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud. He recalled that “statements to that effect were made by President [Vladimir] Putin and President [Donald] Trump.”

“But we don’t want to just let things take their course, because the party of war is still very active in the Middle East,” the Russian minister warned. “We keep hearing various statements from certain members of the Israeli leadership,” he added as an example.

At the same time, Moscow expects European countries to recognize their share of responsibility for the situation in the region. “I very much hope that the European countries will also recognize their responsibility, their share of responsibility,” Lavrov said.

He pointed out that during a recent session of the IAEA Board of Governors, European states “pushed through very sharp anti-Iranian resolutions in the absence of any clear need, which did not help ease tensions, did not promote negotiations, but rather gave a pretext to resort to forceful methods.”

“So I hope our European colleagues will draw the proper conclusions,” the Russian foreign minister remarked.
