Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that Moscow would not refuse a role in mediating the Palestinian-Israeli conflict if participants at the upcoming Gaza summit in Egypt deem it appropriate, but emphasized that Russia will not impose its services.
“We very much hope that everything agreed upon [by the parties to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict] will be fulfilled,” Lavrov said during a meeting with journalists from Arab countries. “If the direct participants of this summit and those who will be handling this issue—the implementation of [US President Donald] Trump's plan after the summit—consider that Russia could be useful, I assure you, we will not refuse. However, it is not in our habit to impose our services,” he added in response to a question.
“We wish the summit success, first and foremost so that the Palestinian people can breathe freely,” Lavrov concluded.
The Peace Summit in Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh is being convened following the official conclusion of a ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip. Earlier, Axios reported that the upcoming summit is expected to be attended by leaders or foreign ministers from the UK, Germany, Indonesia, Jordan, Italy, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and France.
