Lavrov: the US destroys anything that threatens its political interests

27 July 2022

The United States is destroying all countries that threaten its political interests, as it did through military operations in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, Syria and other states. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said this on Wednesday, speaking to representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Addis Ababa.

"When our American colleagues in the past felt that there was a threat to their political interests, they bombed Yugoslavia in 1999, Iraq in 2003, Libya in 2011 and many other countries thousands of kilometers off the US coast. They have unashamedly, without explaining to anyone, very often for a false reason, launched military operations, destroying cities, killing thousands of innocent citizens," he said.

Lavrov pointed out that United States military operations have resulted in cities such as Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria being destroyed. "I do not remember that the progressive civilized West has somehow raised this topic," he added.

The minister stressed that the world is now "in an important historical period when we will have to choose" how to live and how to leave it to the next generations. "We will live in a world that follows the principles of the UN Charter, based on the equality of sovereign states, or in a world where the strongest will dominate. Is it our choice to live in a world of the collective West under the auspices of the United States, which decides when and how to advance its interests?" Lavrov pointed out.
